Ten Weeks Between Generations- A Community Outreach Project Connecting High School Students with Senior Citizens
Connectedness is an important health issue for both elders and teens. The “Ten Weeks Between Generations” program has been established to foster understanding and develop relationships between high school students and elders. The program gives elders a chance to share a wealth of information and living history to a new generation.
During the winter months when senior citizens are often forced to stay indoors, student volunteers agree to contact their senior citizen by phone at least once a week for ten weeks. The phone calls would be at an agreed upon time that is convenient for both the senior and the student. It is hoped that each student will write a brief story of that person’s life derived from these conversations. After the ten week calling period, all participants will meet in person at a luncheon at the Senior Center. At that time, photos will be taken and presentations will be made. This program is sponsored by TRIAD with the Council on Aging and the Randolph Dept. of Elder Affairs. Students receive formal training in how to conduct their conversations. There are 14 high school seniors matched up with 14 of our seniors.
Food assistance for Seniors
If you are a low-income senior age 60 or over, you may now qualify for food assistance through the Food Stamp Program. Even if you own a home, a car or have savings, you may be eligible. Assets are no longer considered for seniors whose income falls within certain guidelines. If you are a senior living alone and your monthly gross income is under $1,734, then your bank accounts and other assets will not count. If there are two people in your home and your total monthly gross income is below $2,334, then your bank accounts and other assets will not count.
